Explore Data

The Explore Data section (accessible via the Left Navigation Menu or the Explore button on the Homepage Dashboard) provides visualization and data grid tools.

Visualize (Sunburst)

The landing page of Visualize displays a Sunburst Chart representing the global classification of identified viruses.

Organization:

  • The chart is classified hierarchically by Serotype and Genotype.

Filters and interactions:

  • Select single or multiple Serotypes.
  • Select single or multiple Genotypes.
  • Combine multiple serotypes and genotypes simultaneously.
  • Click the Filter button to recompute clustering and update the chart.
  • Use Reset to clear all active filters.
  • Use the Time Range slider at the bottom to restrict the visualization to a specific date range.

Export:

  • You can export the Sunburst visualization as an image once you are satisfied with the result.

Data Grid & Table Mode

Users can switch to the Table View (Data Grid) using the toggle at the top of the Explore Data page.

Business usage
The Data Grid is the interface where users explore and validate records at scale.

Technical behavior

  • Columns & Views: Select visible columns.

  • Sorting: Click a header to sort; use Shift+Click for multi-sort.

  • Filtering: The table is fully filterable on all fields:

    • Quick filter across visible columns.
    • Advanced filters (=, , >, <, contains, in).
    • Filters can be combined and saved.
    • Note: Empty cells indicate either missing information or private data (you do not have rights to view that specific field).
  • Selection & bulk actions:
Use the checkboxes in the grid to select multiple sequences. Once selected, you can:

    • delete them in bulk (with permission),
    • add them to a new or existing dataset,
    • share the selected items with Working Groups (when available).
  • Data Editing (owned sequences):

    1. Click the Pencil icon (Edit) to enter edit mode on a sequence.
    2. Modify the editable fields.
    3. Click Continue to trigger a validation check.
    4. If valid, click Apply to save; otherwise, click Back to correct errors.
  • Deletion:
Click the three dots (…) to delete a sequence you own.

  • Export:
Click Download at the bottom to export data. Options include:

    • All data
    • Selected rows
    • Metadata only (CSV)
    • Arbogen IDs only (CSV)
    • FASTA sequences
    • Complete export packages

See also Sequence and Dataset for how these entities behave when exported.

Histogram Visualization

The Histogram View provides aggregated views of data along multiple dimensions:

  • Time Unit (day, week, month, etc.)
  • Data Type
  • Segmentation Field (a finite list determined by the app)

Users can:

  • Adjust the time range.
  • Apply filters.
  • Export histogram charts as images.
